JOB TITLE: Dump Truck Driver


DEPARTMENT: Public Works, Ware County

 

JOB SUMMARY: This position is responsible for operating a tandem dump truck to haul dirt to work sites. This position may perform a variety of laboring tasks when not operating a dump truck.

 

MAJOR DUTIES:

 

  • Operates a tandem dump truck to haul gravel, dirt and other materials to work sites.
  • Operates a front-end loader to load trucks.
  • Operates a backhoe to install driveways and clear debris from pipes.
  • Repairs driveways and installs driveway culverts.
  • Patches paved county roads using hot asphalt.
  • Operates a tractor to mow grass along county roadsides.
  • Flags traffic at work sites.
  • Performs maintenance on the truck, including checking fluid levels.
  • May form, pour and finish concrete.
  • May operate a motor grader and forklift as needed.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION:
  • Knowledge of county and departmental policies and procedures pertaining to road and drainage system maintenance and improvement.
  • Knowledge of county safety policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of defensive driving techniques.
  • Skill in operating a tandem dump truck.
  • Skill in operating such equipment as a front-end loader, backhoe, and other related equipment.
  • Skill in using such tools as a shovel, post-hole digger, and chainsaw.

 

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: The Road Superintendent assigns work in terms of somewhat general instructions. The work is reviewed in progress and upon completion for accuracy, compliance with procedures, and the nature and propriety of the results.

 

GUIDELINES: Guidelines include county policies and procedures, relevant laws, work orders, and supervisory instructions. These guidelines are generally clear and specific, but may require some interpretation in application.


COMPLEXITY: The work consists of related tasks in operating a tandem dump truck.
SCOPE AND EFFECT: The purpose of the position is to operate a tandem dump truck
to haul dirt to work sites. Successful performance facilitates the construction and maintenance of county roads.

 

PERSONAL CONTACTS: Contacts are typically with co-workers and the general public

 

PURPOSE OF CONTACTS: Contacts are typically to give or exchange information and provide services.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work is typically performed with the employee sitting, standing, walking, bending, crouching or stooping. The employee must lift light and heavy objects, use tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, and be able to distinguish between shades of color.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is typically performed outdoors. The employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, and inclement weather. This work may require the use of protective devices such as gloves.

 

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY: None.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Ability to read, write and perform basic mathematical calculations.
  • Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
