ATHLETIC COORDINATOR

JOB SUMMARY: This position is responsible for planning, organizing and supervising adult and youth athletic programs.

MAJOR DUTIES:

  • Plans, promotes, coordinates and supervises adult and youth athletic programs, including tournaments and special events.

  • Supervises and referee’s baseball and basketball games; issues equipment and supervises practices for football games.

  • Cleans and prepares gymnasiums and ballfields for events, including mowing and lining fields, performing general building maintenance duties, and removing trash from grounds.

  • Trains and supervises athletic staff, including part-time and seasonal personnel.

  • Cleans and maintains restrooms, gymnasiums, ballfields, swimming pools, and other departmental facilities.

  • Ensures that employees follow safety rules and regulations.

  • Represents the county and department at district and state tournaments; transports participants to and from events.

  • Transports workers to and from various facilities.

  • Assists with the development of policies, rules and regulations for departmental programs.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION:

  • Knowledge of recreation principles and practices.

  • Knowledge of the rules of a variety of sports.

  • Knowledge of county and departmental policies and procedures.

  • Knowledge of the rules and regulations of a variety of sports organizations.

  • Knowledge of first aid and CPR practices.

  • Skill in planning and coordinating events involving large groups of people.

  • Skill in supervision.

  • Skill in verbal communication and interpersonal relations. o Skill in utilizing a variety of athletic equipment.

  • Skill in operating general office equipment.

  • Skill in the use of such grounds keeping equipment as a tractor, lawn mower, weed eater and field-lining equipment.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: The Director assigns work in terms of general instructions. The work is reviewed upon completion for the nature and propriety of the final results.

GUIDELINES: Guidelines include relevant laws, county policies and procedures, Georgia Parks and Recreation guidelines, the rules of various sports organizations, and departmental and safety guidelines. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.

COMPLEXITY: The work consists of duties in planning and conducting adult and youth recreation programs.

PURPOSE AND EFFECT: The purpose of this position is to provide adult and youth athletic programs to the general public. Successful performance contributes to the quality of community life.

PERSONAL CONTACTS: Contacts are typically with co-workers, coaches, program participants, personnel of other recreation departments, vendors, and the general public.

PURPOSE OF CONTACTS: Contacts are typically to give and exchange information, resolve problems, provide services, and motivate others.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work is typically performed with the employee sitting, standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee must occasionally lift light and heavy objects, climb ladders, use tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, and be able to distinguish between shades of color.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is typically performed outdoors. The employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, irritating chemicals, and inclement weather. The work may require the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles or gloves.

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY: This position has direct supervision over Athletic Assistant (1) and functional supervision over part-time and seasonal personnel.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.

  • Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the work of subordinate positions to be able to answer questions and resolve problems, usually associated with one to three years of experience or service.

  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
