JOB TITLE: F/T Tag and Tax Clerk
DEPARTMENT: Tax Commissioner, Ware County
JOB SUMMARY: This position is responsible for maintaining tag and tax records for the county.
MAJOR DUTIES:
• Sells vehicles tags and processes title applications.
• Balances monies collected against receipts on a daily basis.
• Enters payment and other information to the computer
• Researches tag and tax data and provides general information to the public by telephone and in person.
• Collects payments for state, county and school district ad valorem taxes on properties, vehicles, timber and mobile homes.
• Communicates with state officials to resolve problems as needed.
• Verifies vehicle insurance information from insurance cards or calling insurance agents.
• Performs other related duties as assigned by Tax Commissioner or Deputy Tax Commissioner.
KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION
• Knowledge of property assessments.
• Knowledge of bookkeeping practices
• Knowledge of record-keeping systems for taxes, tags, titles, tax digests, and tax exemptions.
• Knowledge of state tag and title rules and laws, motor vehicle registration guidelines, and tax fee structures.
• Skill in performing basic mathematical calculations.
• Skill in the use of such office equipment as a calculator, cash receipt systems, and computer.
• Skill in dealing with the public.
• Skill in oral and written communication.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: The Deputy Tax Commissioner and Tag/Title Supervisor assign work in terms of somewhat general instructions. Completed work is reviewed for compliance with procedures and the nature and propriety of the final results.
GUIDELINES: Guidelines include State Department of Revenue laws and regulations, county policies and procedures, and standard bookkeeping practices. These guidelines are clear and specific, but require some interpretation in application.
COMPLEXITY: This position consists of related bookkeeping and clerical tasks.
SCOPE AND EFFECT: The purpose of this position is to maintain an accurate bookkeeping system for the collection and disbursal of tax monies. Successful performance helps ensure that the County properly collects and disburses revenues.
PERSONAL CONTACTS: Contacts are typically with co-workers, other county employees, State Department of Revenue officials, real estate agents, attorneys, law enforcement officials, and the general public.
PURPOSE OF CONTACTS: Contacts are typically to give and exchange information, resolve problems, and provide services.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work is typically performed with the employee sitting at a desk or table.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is typically performed in an office that is often noisy.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY: None.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
• Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.
• Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties to of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
