JOB TITLE: Maintenance Assistant-P/T
DEPARTMENT: Recreation
JOB SUMMARY: This position is responsible for assisting with building and grounds maintenance duties.
MAJOR DUTIES:
- Cleans and maintains departmental buildings and facilities, including sweeping and mopping floors, vacuuming carpets, emptying trash, and cleaning glass and woodwork.
- Cleans restrooms, including cleaning and sanitizing fixtures, replacing soap and paper products, mopping floors, and emptying trash containers.
- Constructs and modifies buildings, including constructing interior walls and dividers for buildings.
- Maintains and repairs ball fields, playgrounds, buildings, gymnasiums, and equipment.
- Performs such building maintenance tasks as painting buildings.
- Operates such equipment as a tractor, mower, chainsaw and weed eater to maintain ball fields.
- Performs routine carpentry, plumbing and electrical maintenance and repair on buildings and fixtures.
- Sets up facilities for special events.
- Attends and participates in administrative meetings as required
- Reads and interprets manuals to ensure safe and efficient operation of equipment
- Complies with OSHA Safety and Health rules and regulations.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION:
- Good interpersonal skills, good physical condition, and ability and willingness to perform manual tasks required. Knowledge of the care and proper use of tools, chemicals, and equipment used in cleaning, maintenance, and grounds-keeping.
- Skill in operating vacuum cleaners, floor washers, and buffers. Ability to work independently with little supervision.
- Knowledge of various cleaning supplies, materials and chemicals.
- Skill in operating specialized cleaning equipment and various hand tools.
- Skill in operating such equipment and machinery as mowers, tractors, field lining equipment, saws, and weed eaters.
- Skill in basic electrical, plumbing and carpentry work.
- Skill in communication and interpersonal relations.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: The Maintenance Supervisor assigns work in terms of somewhat general instructions. Completed work is reviewed for compliance with instructions and the nature and propriety of the final results.
GUIDELINES: Guidelines include departmental and safety policies and procedures, supervisory instructions, and standing or special work orders. These guidelines are clear and specific, but may require some interpretation in application.
COMPLEXITY: The work consists of related building and grounds maintenance tasks.
SCOPE AND EFFECT: The purpose of this position is to perform building and grounds maintenance tasks. Successful performance helps ensure a clean and safe environment for departmental activities.
PERSONAL CONTACTS: Contacts are typically with co-workers, community service workers, vendors, and the general public.
PURPOSE OF CONTACTS: Contacts are typically to exchange information and provide services.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work is typically performed with the employee standing, walking, bending, crouching or stooping. The employee must frequently lift light and heavy objects, climb ladders, use tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, and be able to distinguish between shades of color.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is performed both indoors and outdoors. The employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, contagious or infectious diseases, and irritating chemicals. The use of protective devices such as masks, goggles or gloves is required.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY: None.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Ability to read, write and perform basic mathematical calculations.
- Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
- Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
