DEPARTMENT: Recreation, Ware County

 

JOB SUMMARY: This position is responsible for assisting with the supervision of adult and youth athletic programs and preparation of facilities for athletic events.

 

MAJOR DUTIES:

 

  • Supervises and referees baseball and basketball games; issues equipment and supervises practices for football games.
  • Cleans and prepares gymnasiums and ballfields for events, including mowing and lining fields, performing general building maintenance duties, and removing trash from grounds.
  • Cleans and maintains restrooms, gymnasiums, ballfields, swimming pools, and other departmental facilities.
  • Ensures that the general public follows safety rules and regulations.
  • Represents the county and department at district and state tournaments; transports participants to and from events.
  • Recruits and assists with the training of volunteer coaches.
  • Registers program participants and collects program fees.
  • Prepares work schedules for part-time personnel.
  • Prepares facilities for special events.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION:

  • Knowledge of the rules of a variety of sports.
  • Knowledge of first aid and CPR practices.
  • Skill in verbal communication and interpersonal relations.
  • Skill in utilizing a variety of athletic equipment.
  • Skill in the use of such grounds keeping equipment as a tractor, lawn mower, weed eater and field-lining equipment.
  • Skill in the use of general building maintenance equipment.

 

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: The Athletic Coordinator or Maintenance Supervisor assigns work in terms of somewhat general instructions. The work is reviewed upon completion for compliance with established procedures and the nature and propriety of the final results.

 

 

GUIDELINES: Guidelines include the rules of various sports, Georgia Parks and Recreation guidelines, and departmental and safety guidelines. These guidelines are generally clear and specific, but may require some interpretation in application.

 

COMPLEXITY: The work consists of duties in conducting adult and youth recreation programs.

 

SCOPE AND EFFECT: The purpose of this position is to assist with the provision of adult and youth athletic programs to the general public. Successful performance contributes to the quality of community life.

 

PERSONAL CONTACTS: Contacts are typically with co-workers, coaches, program participants, vendors, and the general public.

 

PURPOSE OF CONTACTS: Contacts are typically to give and exchange information and provide services.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work is typically performed with the employee sitting, standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee must occasionally lift light and heavy objects, climb ladders, use tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, and be able to distinguish between shades of color.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is typically performed outdoors. The employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, irritating chemicals, and inclement weather. The work may require the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles or gloves.

 

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY: None. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Ability to read, write and perform basic mathematical calculations.
  • Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
