JOB TITLE: Emergency Medical Technician

DEPARTMENT: Emergency Medical Services, Ware County

JOB SUMMARY: This position is responsible for administering appropriate emergency medical treatment to victims of accidents and other life-threatening situations.

MAJOR DUTIES:

  • Renders emergency and life-saving medical assistance to those in need.

  • Responds to sites of life-threatening or other emergency medical situations.

  • Insures the proper functioning of all emergency medical equipment and vehicles through regular inspection.

  • Insures that an adequate inventory of supplies is aboard emergency vehicles through regular checks.

  • Transports injured or sick persons to the appropriate care facility.

  • Extricates victims of accidents when necessary.

  • Completes necessary state and local paperwork, including reports and billings.

  • Makes presentations to schools and civic organizations.

  • Maintains a current state certification through continuing education.

  • Performs maintenance and housekeeping duties as assigned.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION:

  • Knowledge of basic emergency medical and life-sustaining techniques, including cardiac care, trauma and shock care, and ventilation and other CPR techniques.

  • Knowledge of the road system and geography of the county.

  • Knowledge of radio communications.

  • Skill in driving, emergency and otherwise.

  • Skill in the administration of emergency medical techniques.

  • Skill in extrication techniques.

  • Skill in patient assessment.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: The Captain or Paramedic assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks work in progress and upon completion for accuracy and compliance with instructions and standardized procedures.

GUIDELINES: Guidelines include state laws pertaining to emergency medical treatment, departmental procedures, and medical protocol. These guidelines are generally clear and specific, but require interpretation in application.

COMPLEXITY: This position consists of technical tasks in patient care and transportation. The need to determine appropriate medical procedures for a wide variety of situations contributes to the complexity of the work.

SCOPE AND EFFECT: The purpose of this position is to administer emergency medical care to victims as an agent of the physician. Successful performance on this job directly affects the health and well-being of citizens of the county.

PERSONAL CONTACTS: Contacts are typically with co-workers, hospital personnel, law enforcement officers, firefighters, victims of accidents and their families, and other members of the general public.

PURPOSE OF CONTACTS: Contacts are typically to provide services, exchange information, and provide counseling for victims and their families.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work is typically performed with the employee sitting, standing, walking, bending, crouching or stooping. The employee must lift light and heavy objects, climb ladders, use equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, and be able to distinguish between shades of color.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is typically performed both inside the station house and in highly stressful outdoor situations. The employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, machinery with moving parts, contagious or infectious diseases, and inclement weather. The work requires the use of protective devices such as surgical gloves.

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY: None.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education.

  • Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.

  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain appropriate state EMS certification.

  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
