JOB TITLE: Utility Worker

 

DEPARTMENT: Public Works, Ware County

 

JOB SUMMARY: This position is responsible for providing general clerical and laboring assistance to the department for the maintenance and repair of roads and drainage systems.

 

MAJOR DUTIES:

 

  • Assists with checking parts and supplies in and out of the parts room for departmental personnel; fills out work orders.
  • Picks up parts and supplies as needed.
  • Drives a dump truck to transport dirt to work sites.
  • Assists Motor grader Operators by clearing roads, cleaning pipes, maintaining records of work projects completed, and assisting with the maintenance of motor graders.
  • Assists with the maintenance of rights-of-way by following mowers to clear roads and ditches.
  • Counts dump trucks loaded with dirt as they enter the landfill.
  • Maintains daily records of work performed.
  • Performs other road and drainage system maintenance tasks as needed, including flagging traffic, installing signs and pipes, repairing potholes, clearing beaver dams, and removing tree limbs.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned. KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION:
  • Knowledge of county and safety rules and regulations.
  • Knowledge of basic road and drainage system maintenance methods, materials and standards.
  • Skill in the care and use of hand tools.
  • Skill in maintaining records.
  • Skill in following oral instructions.

 

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: The Road Superintendent assigns work in terms of somewhat general instructions. Work is reviewed in progress and upon completion for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.

 

GUIDELINES: Guidelines include safety rules and regulations, work orders, and instructions from the supervisor.   These guidelines are clear and specific, but may require some interpretation in application.

 

COMPLEXITY: This position consists of related laboring tasks.

 

SCOPE AND EFFECT: The purpose of this position is to assist with road maintenance. Successful performance helps assure safe and attractive rights-of-way.

 

PERSONAL CONTACTS: Contacts are typically with co-workers, vendors, and other county employees.

 

PURPOSE OF CONTACTS: Contacts are typically to exchange information and provide services.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work is typically performed with the employee sitting, standing, walking, bending, crouching or stooping. The employee must frequently lift light objects and occasionally lift heavy objects.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT:     The work is performed indoors and outdoors.      The employee may be exposed to noise, dust, dirt, machinery with moving parts, and inclement weather.  Some work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles or gloves.

 

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY:        None.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Ability to read, write and perform basic mathematical calculations.
  • No experience requirements.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
